Minimum Essential Medium (MEM), developed by Harry Eagle, is a widely used synthetic basal medium and an advancement of Basal Medium Eagle (BME). This formulation contains Earle’s Balanced Salt Solution (EBSS), L-glutamine, glucose and 2.2 g/L sodium bicarbonate, with phenol red and without HEPES. It supports a broad range of mammalian cells and is readily supplemented with amino acids or small amounts of serum.
