PAN-Biotech Named a „Top Contract Manufacturing Organization in Europe 2024“

Trade publication Pharma Tech Outlook recognizes PAN-Biotech for outstanding quality, speed, and customer focus across the entire value chain – from research to commercialization.

Aidenbach, Germany – PAN-Biotech, an internationally active manufacturer of high-quality sterile liquids, cell culture media, and customized formulations for the biotechnology and pharmaceutical industries, has been named one of the „Top 10 Contract Manufacturing Organizations in Europe 2024“ by trade publication Pharma Tech Outlook. The award recognizes the company‘s commitment to quality, speed, and customer focus across the entire product lifecycle.

Nearly Four Decades of Cell Culture Expertise

For almost 40 years, PAN-Biotech has supported research institutions as well as biotechnology and pharmaceutical companies worldwide with a broad product portfolio – ranging from sera to serum-free media and customized formulations for optimal cell culture performance.

„We are driven by a passion for science and a commitment to excellence. Our mission is to empower our customers with the tools they need to make a meaningful impact on the world,“ says Jens Hartmann, CEO of PAN-Biotech.

Highest Quality Standards – „Made in Germany“

PAN-Biotech is one of the few European companies that consistently follows true Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards across all of its facilities, complemented by ISO 9001 and ISO 13485 certifications. The company recently opened a new production unit operating at the highest available standard – EU GMP Annex 1 – further reinforcing its „Made in Germany“ quality commitment.

Support Across the Entire Product Lifecycle

A key factor in PAN-Biotech‘s success is its continuous support of customers – from early-stage research through clinical trials to commercialization:

  • Early research stage: University spin-offs benefit from PAN-Biotech‘s infrastructure and expertise when they lack their own facilities for preclinical production.

  • Phase 1 clinical trials: The focus shifts to preparing for regulatory requirements. „During this phase, switching from research-use-only (RUO) to GMP is essential to ensure quality,“ says Hartmann. „Key differences include using higher-grade raw materials, qualified water for injection, single-use equipment, and thorough documentation.“

  • Phase 3 and commercialization: PAN-Biotech supports customers through the transition to larger production partners, ensuring a seamless transfer of knowledge.

With its PAN Complete approach, the company combines manufacturing and logistics into a comprehensive, full-service solution tailored to the diverse needs of the biotechnology sector.

Rapid Response for Time-Critical Projects

PAN-Biotech has built a reputation for exceptionally fast turnaround times. While larger companies often need four to six weeks to integrate a new product, PAN-Biotech can complete all necessary paperwork, manufacture, and ship the product within that same timeframe.

One example: when a major manufacturer faced an unexpected production halt in November, PAN-Biotech delivered more than 10,000 liters of the required product within eight weeks – fully bottled, packed, and labeled under the client‘s branding. In total, it supplied more than 150,000 liters. The company has a filling capacity of up to 1.8 million liters per year. A leading vaccine manufacturer likewise received between 40,000 and 50,000 liters of buffers and injection solutions within eight weeks.

Innovations Shaping the Future of Cell Culture

Among PAN-Biotech‘s pioneering developments is Panexin, the world‘s first serum-replacement product and a reliable animal-free alternative to traditional serum. Panexin addresses the variability and ethical concerns associated with animal-derived components, delivering more reproducible results in cell culture.

The company also offers a broad range of high-purity water products – including sterile water, GMP-grade water, and water for cell culture and injection (WFI) – available in various formats such as tubes, bottles,
2D/3D bags, and canisters. Through its own eShop, roughly 85 percent of products are available in stock, with worldwide delivery within two days.

Looking Ahead: Cell and Gene Therapy, mRNA, and Sustainability

PAN-Biotech is advancing the development of specialized media and reagents for cell and gene therapies as well as mRNA-based therapeutics, while continuously improving processes for antibody and vaccine production.

The company is also taking responsibility on sustainability: through its Save the Planet initiative, launched in 2018, PAN Biotech operates a comprehensive recycling system with more than 1,000 collection points and has already returned and recycled more than 500,000 cell culture media bottles.

„This recognition confirms the path we are on and the daily commitment of our entire team,“ says Hartmann. „We will continue working to support our customers with the highest quality, speed, and reliability.“
