Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) without calcium and magnesium, with 0.35 g/L sodium bicarbonate and phenol red, is a balanced salt solution for use with cells under non-CO2 conditions. Being free of calcium and magnesium, it is well suited to washing steps in cell dissociation procedures, and the phenol red provides a visual pH indicator.
