Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) with calcium and magnesium and 0.35 g/L sodium bicarbonate, without phenol red, is a balanced salt solution for use with cells under non-CO2 conditions. The absence of phenol red makes it suitable for applications where the indicator dye could interfere, such as fluorescence and absorbance measurements, while still providing Ca and Mg and standard HBSS buffering.
