Hanks’ Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS) with calcium and magnesium and 0.35 g/L sodium bicarbonate is a balanced salt solution that maintains pH and osmolality and provides essential inorganic ions. HBSS is designed for use with cells kept under non-CO2 atmospheric conditions. This variant contains the divalent cations Ca and Mg and phenol red as a pH indicator, and is used to wash and handle cells and as a carrier solution.

Hanks’ salts for non-CO2 handling. A balanced salt solution with Ca, Mg and phenol red for washing and handling cells.

Why HBSS, w: Ca and Mg, w: 0.35 g/L NaHCO3

  • For non-CO2 conditions – HBSS is designed for atmospheric (non-CO2) handling.
  • Contains Ca and Mg – divalent cations for adhesion-dependent steps.
  • Phenol red – built-in pH indicator.
  • Quality controlled – sterile and released to specifications.
