Cell and Gene Therapy

Cell and gene therapies are intersecting fields in medicine, which both aim to provide a cure to patients with diseases. They have the potential to fully cure or prevent diseases instead of only treating the symptoms.

Cell therapies utilize living cells to induce a therapeutic effect in patients. Different cells are suitable for specific purposes. For example, stem cells can be used to repair tissue while immune cells can support a patient to fight cancer.
In contrast, gene therapies focus on the therapy of diseases that are caused by dysfunctional genes. This happens when sections of DNA are duplicated, substituted or deleted from the genome. Medical companies try to tackle these issues by developing methods to alter these dysfunctional genes in a patient.
